No matter the type or style you choose, you can’t go wrong with hardwood floors. As they are made from real wood, hardwood floors can add a beautiful, natural finish to your home. Whether you have a modern, sleek style or are more traditional, hardwood floors can fit in with any decor.

While rooms like kitchens and basements may need some extra considerations to deal with moisture, you can use hardwood floors in most spaces and rooms within your home.

Types Of Hardwood Flooring
There are three different types of hardwood, or solid wood flooring: strip, plank, and parquet.

  • Strip flooring: This type of hardwood flooring usually has widths between 25 and 76mm (1 - 3 inches), but the lengths of the strips can vary. It also ranges in thickness from  7.94 to 19.1mm (5/16 - ¾ of an inch).

  • Plank flooring: Planks are wider than strip wood and have widths that vary between 76.2 to 304.8mm (1 - 12 inches). They have two thicknesses: 12.7mm (½ inch) and 19.1mm (¾ inch).

  • Parquet flooring: This type of hardwood flooring differs from planks and strips as it makes use of wooden slats that are placed in geometric patterns and held in place by an adhesive or mechanical fastening.

Finished Or Unfinished Hardwood Flooring?
You can get either unfinished hardwood or a prefinished option. If you want to try to match the color of your existing floors or apply a custom stain, then you will need to get unfinished hardwood. Once installed and stained, it is then given the protective finish.

Prefinished hardwood flooring already has the protective top layer applied so installation takes quicker and you can walk on your new floors immediately.

If you’re installing hardwood floors in your kitchen, unfinished hardwood is best because the finish will help to seal the cracks between the boards so that moisture can’t seep through and damage the wood.

What Are The Advantages Of Hardwood Flooring?
While hardwood floors are known for being on the pricey side, they have lots of advantages. Not only are they beautiful and natural-looking, but they are a long-term investment as they can last hundreds of years if maintained properly.

They also come in a variety of different styles and types of wood so you can easily match them to your home. This classic flooring type is timeless and when they start to look dull, you can make them look brand new again by re-sanding them and applying a new layer of protective finish.

What Is The Best Wood For Hardwood Floors?
Certain woods are harder than others and, thus, are better for hardwood floors. Some of the best woods include oak, maple, and cherry. Walnut, bamboo, ash, and mahogany are also good options. If you want something more exotic, like teak or mesquite, then get ready to spend a bit more on your floors.

No matter what type of wood you choose, always make sure that it was harvested from sustainable forests.
