Tile is one of the most commonly used flooring options, and it has been for a long time. For a durable, low-maintenance floor, it is a perfect choice! If installed correctly, a tile floor can be trusted to last for decades, without reinstallation or the need for an upgrade.

Tiles come in various styles, types, and a diverse range of colors, sizes, shapes, and textures. This means that they are incredibly versatile and suitable for use in almost any room. Most commonly, however, tiles are used in bathrooms, kitchens, and showers as they are a water-resistant flooring option.

What Are The Different Types of Tiles?

You may think that a tile is a tile. However, that is not the case. There are a few different types to choose from - each offering a unique look and feel.

Ceramic
A ceramic tile is made of minerals, water, and natural clay-based products. All the components are mixed together and pressed into the desired shape. Often, ceramic tiles will have a glaze, which makes them waterproof. However, they are also available unglazed. The latter option brings with it a more natural appearance, but the tile will not be waterproof, only water-resistant.

Porcelain
A solution of water and clay (often containing feldspar, kaolin, and quartz), porcelain tiles are denser than ceramic one. Thus, they are more durable and waterproof.

Terra-cotta
Created using raw clay, terra-cotta tiles are unglazed and permeable. They need proper sealing to ensure longevity.

Natural Stone
As one of the most expensive options, stone is the most unique as its patterns develop naturally. This option requires more upkeep than other tile types.

Styles Of Floor Tiles
If you have a preferred style in mind, the truth is that it’s probably out there and available for purchase. Tile styles are virtually endless so it would be impossible to list them all. However, some styles are more popular than others.

  • Patterned: For a more animated, creative, or bright finish, a patterned tile will suit your needs. You can pick the perfect pattern for your personality and to match your decor.

  • Wood: If you’d like a lumber looking finish, then go for the wood-look. They are designed to look natural and warm, without the fuss of actual wood.

  • Stone: This style can mimic marble, limestone, slate, and more. It gives off the effect of stone tiles for a much lower cost.

What Are The Benefits Of Tile Floors?
Tiles are longer-lasting than most other flooring options. Some tiling options barely even scratch. They are also very low-maintenance and are easy to clean without the need for special products. A quick mop will remove stains.

In addition, their diversity means there are endless possibilities and anyone can find an option they like.

Is There A Difference Between Wall And Floor Tiles?
Wall tiles are much thinner and weigh less than floor tiles. This is because they do not have to hold the weight of people walking on them. Floor tiles need to withstand heavy weights and high pressure. Thus, they are stronger and more durable.
